Types of Leave 
                   As per rule 8.1 of Punjab CSR Vol-1 Part-1 leave is earned by duty only. Certain kinds of leave which can be sanctioned to a government employee as per Punjab CSR are shown in table below:-
1.   Earned Leave: - It means leave earned in respect of period spent on duty.
2.  Half pay Leave: - It is admissible to a permanent government employee for each completed year of 'service' is 20 days. The half pay leave due could also be granted to a government employee on medical certificate or on private affairs.
3. Commuted Leave: - Commuted leave not exceeding half the amount of half pay leave due may be granted to a Government employee on medical certificate only.
(i) Commuted leave during the whole service shall be limited to maximum of (240) days;
        (ii) When commuted leave is granted, twice the quantity of such leave shall be debited against the half pay leave due;
        (iii) Half pay leave up to a maximum of 180 days shall be allowed to be commuted during the entire service where such leave is utilized for an approved course of study certified to be within the public interest by the leave sanctioning authority:
   Provided that no commuted leave could also be granted under this rule unless the authority competent to sanction leave has reason to believe that the Government employee will return to duty on its expiry, and provided further that no commuted leave could also be granted unless it's been applied for a minimum of 15 days at a time.
4.   Extraordinary Leave:- This leave may be granted to an employee when no other leave is admissible to an employee or when other leave is admissible, but government employee himself applies in writing for the grant of extraordinary leave.
5. Special disability Leave:- A competent authority may grant special disability leave to a Government employee who is disabled by injury intentionally inflicted or caused in or in consequence of, due performance of his official duties or in consequence of his official position.
6.  Study Leave:- This leave may be granted to a government employee to enable him to study scientific, technical or undergo special course of study.
7. Maternity leave:- Competent Authority may grant maternity leave to a female government employee for a period of not exceeding 180 days without the necessity of production of medical certificate and the grant of such a leave, shall be so regulated that the date of confinement falls within the amount of this leave. Provided that this leave cannot be granted to an employee having three or more living children.
8. Hospital Leave: - Competent authority may grant hospital leave to a Group D Government employee and such Group C Government employee whose duties involve handling of dangerous machinery, explosive material, poisonous drugs, etc., or the performance of hazardous tasks, while under medical treatment for illness or injury if such illness or injury is directly thanks to risks incurred within the course of their official duties.
9. Paternity Leave: - A male government employee having less than two surviving children, may be granted Paternity leave up to maximum of 15 days (after commuting 30 days of half pay leave).
10.Adoption leave: - Adoption leave may be granted to a woman Government employee, who does not have her own children and adopts a newly born child.
11.Child Care Leave: - A woman Government employee having minor children below the age of eighteen years, may be granted Child Care Leave for a maximum period of one year (i.e. 365 days) during her entire service for taking care of two eldest surviving children, whether for rearing or to look after any of their needs such as examination, sickness and the like, on production of a documentary proof.
12. Casual Leave: - Casual leave may be granted to Government employees for short periods by the authorities specified in Appendix 12 of Punjab Civil Service Rules Vol.-I Part-II. In taking casual leave, within the limits admissible above, an employee may remain continuously absent from duty for a maximum of 16 days. In this spell he will be permitted to include holidays which will not be debited to his casual leave account. The total spell, however, should in no case exceed 16 days.
13.Quarantine Leave: - Quarantine leave is leave of absence from duty necessitated by orders not to attend office in consequence of the presence of infectious diseases in the family or household of a Government employee. Such leave could also be granted by the top of the Office on the certificate of a Medical or Public Health Officer for a period not exceeding 21 days or in exceptional circumstances, 30 days. Quarantine leave isn't admissible within the case of state employee who himself contracts a communicable disease.
